Make a Class Mural

Create a mural on a large class wall with connections to your learning. Work on it through-out the year or over a day, it's a great group effort. If you can't dedicate a class wall, communities usually have fire hydrants or walls they would love to have someone beautify.

Hunt & Carve
A soap carving lesson after looking at the art of Canadian carver Richard Hunt. Designed for grade 4 however, I remember doing this type of lesson in grade 2 (which was not yesterday, so it goes to show the staying power of a great lesson).

Sketch to Stretch
Read a story. Talk about the feelings conjured up through-out the book. Make a list and get each student to illustrate 2 feelings they felt through-out the story. This lesson helps students analyze emotions and then depict them. There are no wrong feelings or drawings of feelings. Each students should feel free to choose the colors they wish and create the art work they wish. At the end discuss why each students choose certain colors to describe certain feelings and talk about their art work. This was done with a resistance technique using oil pastels and watercolors. Observational Drawings Lessons
We had done this with flowers. Each student got a flower and drew it as precise as possible looking for lots of details. They outlined with black sharpies and colored hard with crayons or pastels. After they colored their drawings we took food coloring and water in a spray bottle and faded the coloring of the paper. Here is a detailed lesson for grade primary and one. This lesson can get messy and may be better for older grades.

I like to teach children about positive and negative space in images because it can really distort perspectives and open children's eyes.
