Ideas and Lesson Plans
Early Literacy Skills
CH-UNK-ING words is an imoprtant skill for language learners. It helps them remember small segments of words and sounds to make spelling and reading easier.
Syllable segmenting is often done with claps but for added spice try foot taps or chops up your arm. When doing the chops up your arm, start at your fingertips and see how far up your arm you can get by counting the syllables. Children can then visualize and make the association that words with more syllables are longer words.

Arts Infusion Units
Caldecott Awards
This lesson plan was planned with grade 6 in mind as a way to reintroduce excellent pictures and build confidence in some struggling class readers. It can be adapted to many grade levels and, depending on the Caldecott Award winning books you choose, can fit into science, social studies, math, health and art.

Julia Donaldson

The rhyme and repetition of these books allow for children to predict upcoming events and join in the reading.
In primary we had a Julia Donaldson week. We read aloud a new Julia Donaldson (with illustrator Axel Sheffler) book each week. At the end of the week we made a graph to discover which book was the most popular. We did a finger puppet play of The Gruffalo using the finger puppet from Julia Donaldson’s fabulous site: http://www.gruffalo.com/ (look under games and activities. Here are the The Gruffalo scripts we used).
The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child are both wonderful books for starting discussions on adjectives. Read the book without showing them the images of the Gruffalo. Give each student a pencil and paper and have them draw a picture according to the descriptions used.
